Fine dining, mountain myths, and slow steamship travel — float through a Swiss fairytale on Lake Lucerne.

Fine dining, mountain myths, and slow steamship travel — float through a Swiss fairytale on Lake Lucerne.

It’s mid-September and I’m gliding along the turquoise waters of Switzerland’s famed Lake Lucerne with a flute of fizzing champagne in hand, reveling in the autumnal alpine air—a treat for a South Floridian who lives in a constant state of summer. I’m aboard the restored Gallia paddle steamship, the fastest steamship in Europe, for their new “Legends of Lake Lucerne” tour. While there are countless ways to explore this longtime boaters’ paradise, this new experience delves into the area’s history—where a dapper character dressed in tails and a top-hat theatrically narrates the past and present— and offers a five-course meal and bespoke service paired with scenery that gets better with every passing moment.

Upon boarding,

a flurry of regal servers emerges, offering refreshing towelettes and trays of bubbly, and when the steamship sounds its high-pitched whistle, the adventure begins. With a maximum of 65 guests, it feels as though you have the large boat—and the fairytale surroundings—all to yourself. The experience unfolds much like a play, with scenery that constantly changes from Lucerne’s medieval architecture, flower boxes and storybook swans to glimpses of daily life with rowing squads and sailboats bobbing in the wind.

During the five-hour experience, we sailed passed Mount Pilatus, where dragons were believed to once live, the Rigi mountain range, and charming villages and castles that dot the shoreline. At one point, it felt as if we had sailed in the Norwegian fjords in the southeastern arm of the lake, Urnersee, where towering mountain peaks seemingly plunge into the deep-blue waters.

The biggest luxury is the freedom to roam.

You can settle at one of the deck’s al fresco tables or find a finely dressed table in the main dining room draped in glossy woods to savor a five-course meal that ranges from silky fondue to local seafood and meats. Intermittently, I’d tuck away on a bench for a peaceful moment alone, letting the sunlight hit my face; or fill my camera roll with endless pictures of the passing scenery. When I got caught up in the views, one of the servers found me on the deck, armed with the lunch course that I had missed while away from my table. And my glass was never empty of Swiss wines or Bollinger champagne.

While boating on Lake Lucerne is a cherished pastime, this cruise is the way to see the lake through a luxurious lens that will linger in your memory long after the Swiss Alps fade from view.

The “Legends of Lake Lucerne” cruise is available from mid-May to mid-September. The cost is $554, but with the Swiss Travel Pass it’s $420.
