The Backstory: The big top never quite left Sarasota—and the Cirque St. Armands Beachside—puts on a grand show of its own. Fronting Lido Beach, the new hotel is a glam nod to the 1920s, when John Ringling moved the winter headquarters of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus to town. It was a golden era when elephants wore fancy headdresses, trapeze artists soared, and big cats were tamed under bright lights.

Hotel Vibe: The greatest illusion? The show-stopping hotel used to be a Holiday Inn. Now, sophisticated Art Deco-inspired social spaces are dashed with circus whimsy. Think of the lobby as the center ring, drenched in color, with velvety conversation circles, ostrich-feather chandeliers, and sculptural columns with soft big-top energy. Billboard-sized artwork depicting circus scenes dot the property, rich draperies frame arching entryways, and even guest room floors are part of the act with illuminated marquee numbers.

The Rooms: Guest rooms tone down the drama, offering a more tranquil atmosphere with subtle circus nods like vintage photos and coffee table books. All rooms come with balconies—many flaunting beach and Gulf views. Spring for a one-bedroom suite with a kitchen, living room and separate bedroom that comes with a decadent soaking tub.

The Amenities: Slip behind ruby-red draperies to dine at Ringside, the signature restaurant designed like a vintage railcar, featuring a seafood-driven menu. Walls of windows frame beach and sunset views, while private dining booths hidden behind curtains make you feel like a circus VIP. Sip a cocktail that’s as theatrical as the setting at lobby lounge, Midway.

The Area: Sarasota is rooted in circus landmarks, most famously The Ringling Museum of Art, Circus Museum, and the Ca’ d’Zan mansion. (Insider’s Tip: The Museum of Art is free on Mondays.) Hop on the gratis hotel shuttle to Cirque’s sister property, Lido Beach Resort, for their pools and private beach access; or ride over to St. Armands Circle for upscale shopping and dining.
